Storage Performance Takes The Gold

February 23, 2010

Two of DaynerHall's illustrious staff are among the spectators in Vancouver this week - enjoying the brisk weather and cultural exuberance that defines the modern Winter Olympics. But they're also joined by one of our clients... or, at the very least, their products. Omneon (based out of Sunnyvale, CA) is providing their MediaGrid storage platform as a high-speed distribution platform for NBC's HD coverage of the event. In fact, when I was watching women's curling this weekend (which showcased to US beating the UK, but then subsequently falling to the Canadians), I bragged to my father-in-law about the cutting-edge EVS-based digital infrastructure that was enabling high-bandwidth workflow and transcoding for the perfect picture we were admiring.

Needless to say, he was impressed. I think. Truthfully, he was entranced by the accuracy of the athletes, and wrapped up in deciphering the sport's nebulous terminology... like "hogging."

But it's exciting and rewarding to see our clients succeed in such large venues. With more than 400 hours of live competition streaming to NBCOlympics.com, the demand for video content is greater than ever before – and Omneon's unique technology is right at the center of it. Their hardware and software solutions are proving critical to the rapid delivery of Internet and mobile content, enabling NBC to create, process and deliver media clips faster and more efficiently than ever.

As I continue to watch the coverage of the Olympics in Vancouver – marveling at the profound applications of Omneon's platform – I'm wondering how much better the experience is for my colleagues. I mean, with HD picture and access to NBC's online coverage, I can drink my hot cocoa to the exhilaration of the bobsled run, and almost "feel" like I'm there...

In shorts and a t-shirt.

That's why Omneon takes the gold. Hey... do I hear the National Anthem playing?
